Pacemaker Implantation

Pacemaker implantation is a surgical procedure to implant a small, battery-powered device called a pacemaker under the skin, usually below the collarbone, to help regulate the heart's rhythm. It is typically recommended for individuals whose heart beats too slowly or irregularly.

Why do you need pacemaker implantation?

  • When the heartbeat is unstable or unpredictable.
  • If surgery or medications interfere with heart rhythm.
  • When your heart beats too slowly, causing fatigue, dizziness, or fainting.
  • A delay or blockage in the heart’s electrical signals that affects how your heart beats.

How is the pacemaker implantation performed?

  • A small incision is made near the collarbone.
  • The pacemaker device is inserted under the skin.
  • One or more wires are guided through a vein into the heart and connected to the device.
  • The procedure is typically done under local anaesthesia and takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete.
