LVAD Implantation
LVAD implantation is a surgical procedure in which a Left Ventricular Assist Device is placed in the chest to support a weakened heart in pumping blood more efficiently. It is typically used for patients with advanced heart failure when the heart can no longer maintain adequate circulation on its own.
Why is LVAD implantation performed?
- To keep patients stable while they wait for a donor heart.
- To allow the heart to rest and potentially recover its function.
- To treat those patients who are not eligible for a heart transplant.
- To assess a patient’s eligibility for a transplant or determine the best long-term care approach.
How is LVAD implantation performed?
- It is performed under general anesthesia in an operating room.
- Here the pump is connected to the left ventricle and the aorta (main artery).
- A driveline cable exits the body and connects to an external controller and power source, which the patient wears.
- The device provides ongoing support to keep blood flowing steadily throughout the body.
