Intravascular Imaging
Intravascular imaging is an advanced diagnostic technique that allows doctors to see inside blood vessels, especially the coronary arteries, from within. It provides highly detailed, real-time images that help assess the structure, plaque buildup, and severity of narrowing inside the vessels.
Why is intravascular imaging performed?
- To assess the extent of plaque buildup (atherosclerosis).
- To guide and optimise stent placement during angioplasty.
- To detect complications like blood clots or stent malposition.
- To evaluate previously placed stents and check for blockages.
Types of intravascular imaging:
- Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
- Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)
